The Skills You Need for the Entertainment Industry

The Skills You Need for the Entertainment IndustryThe Skills You Need for the Entertainment IndustryOne of the more frustrating experiences I had when going to school was that there were very few classes I thought would adequately prepare me to meet my goal of having a career in the entertainment industry. I found myself ignoring many of my three Rs (writing, reading, and arithmetic) and taking any class that sounded even remotely like it had some relation to the entertainment field. But fruchtwein of these classes were media studies where we discussed the various effects of the media on society, etc. Although these were valuable classes, many of them did bedrngnis give me the formal entertainment industry education I thought I would need. What I didnt know back then was just how valuable all of my classes were and how many of them would indirectly prepare me for every entertainment job I would ever have. One big misnomer in the entertainment biz is that to work in the field, you nee d to have some sort of formalized training. Although there is some truth to that for certain positions (e.g., camera operator, editor, director, etc.), the good news is that the majority of people who work in entertainment have backgrounds and educations that have little if any relation to the industry. Most of your experience will be gained while working on the job. But there are still a number of generalized skills that you should be developing now that you will find will come in handy and help make your entry into the Hollywood realm as successful as possible. Valuable Skills to Develop Even if you never take a formal entertainment class, more than likely there are a number of classes you are currently taking where you should pay special attention. Here are some valuable skills you should be developing Business Math Money makes the world go round and Hollywood is no exception. People that master their financial accounting skills become extremely valuable commodities in the e ntertainment field. Those individuals that can effectively manage the budgets of all of the various television shows, digital productions and movies are like human bars of gold to most major entertainment companies. Technology There is no disputing that technology plays a huge part in the entertainment industry. From camera and editing equipment to lights, special effects, computers, and much more, without technology, many of the films weve enjoyed would never have come to be. By honing your skills in this subject you will automatically find yourself becoming an extremely valuable member of any production set. Art Graphics From movie posters to set designs, there are a huge number of opportunities that utilize those people that have artistic ability. From architects to painters, there is a growing need for skilled artisans who can bring their talents a production set. Fashion If you studied fashion for years but quickly decided the fashion industry isnt for you, then you might cons ider applying your skills to the entertainment industry. Wardrobe and cosmetic design are always in huge demand in Hollywood and those who have a flair for this particular field are held in high regard and are often paid accordingly. Writing Any writing skills you might have the chance to develop will become extremely valuable no matter which career path you choose. Obviously working as a television writer or screenwriter can be quite lucrative, just knowing how to communicate effectively through the written word will help jumpstart your career. School of Life Also, dont forget the value of life experience. For most creative positions such as a writer or director, being able to call upon certain moments in your history will also prove quite valuable. Some of the best moments in entertainment have come through the memories of their creators. Your education is preparing you better than you think for most entertainment related positions. Either way, dont feel discouraged if youre takin g classes that dont directly relate to the field. You will find that your education will serve you well no matter what area you focus on.

The Easy Way to Be More Likable at Work - The Muse

The Easy Way to Be More Likable at Work - The MuseThe Easy Way to Be More Likable at Work We all want to be well liked- especially by ur co-workers. Hey, you spend more time with these people than you do with your friends and your family, so it only makes sense that youd rather not be the Regina George of your office.Like me, youve probably read your fair share of tips and advice on how to be more likable at work. But, if youre really like me, you probably went on to implement absolutely none of it. Guilty as charged? Yeah, thats what I thought. But, I have news for you Being more likable isnt really all that difficult. It doesnt need to be this major, complex undertaking. In fact, theres one thing you can do that will instantly make you gain favor with absolutely everybody on your team.Whats this magical answer? Its simple Be a better team player.Lets face it- pretty much everybody loves and respects the part whos willing to lend a helping hand or take one for the team every now and then. So, if youre eager to have your co-workers shower you in compliments and adoration, you need to step up to the plate and prove that youre not always just looking out for number one.How do pull this off and prove that you subscribe to that age-old clich of, Theres no I in team? Here are a few simple tips you can implement immediately- and fairly easily.1. Do the Thing Nobody Else Wants to DoHave you ever heard a fellow employee let out a complaint that goes something like, How dare Jason clean out the breakroom microwave I was planning on complaining about the exploded ravioli that was in there for another solid three weeks? No? I didnt think so.Most of us want to skip out on the dirty work and those tasks that make us cringe (or worse, gag), and well pretty much do anything and everything in our power in order to do so.But, if you can position yourself as the team member wholl roll up your sleeves and actually unjam the printer- rather than repeatedly walking past that obnoxi ous blinking light while not-so-convincingly pretending you dont see it? Well, its pretty much impossible for anybody to dislike you. 2. Dont Just ListenSure, sometimes its nice to have somebody there to listen to you vent about your schwierigkeits. But, do you know what else is great? Somebody whos willing to step up and help you fix them. The next time a co-worker is ranting to you about how swamped she is or how she keeps getting stuck with a pesky error in Excel, go past just listening and see if you can offer any potentially helpful solutions. Are you familiar enough with her work that you could volunteer to take something off her plate for the time being? Are you an Excel whiz who could take a quick look at that spreadsheet and get rid of that obnoxious problem?Yes, even being available to commiserate or sympathize with that rolle is a nice and friendly gesture. But, if you can take things a step further and actually spring into action to make your colleagues life a little easie r, youll quickly foster a reputation as the nicest one in your office. 3. Do Something Nice- Just BecauseWhens the last time you did something nice for your colleagues, just because you felt like it? Are you drawing a major blank? Dont worry- you arent alone. Just like in any other relationship, it becomes easy to forget to do those little things that show your appreciation for your co-workers. So, why not do something today?Pick up some pastries or a few extra coffees on your way into the office in the morning. Offer a genuine compliment, like on a project that a colleague recently knocked out of the park. Or, empty your team members trash while youre taking your own out. unterstellung are all super minor things that require almost no effort on your part. But, they can make a huge difference in the way your co-workers perceive you. And, bonus, its bound to make you feel good too You probably dont strut into the office each and every morning thinking, Lets see how many of my teammat es I can piss off today At least, I certainly hope you dont. For the most part, we all want to be liked in the office. And, fortunately, its not that hard to foster a positive reputation and strengthen the bonds you share with your colleagues. Believe it or not, all you really need is to be an awesome team player.Implement these three easy tips to do just that, and youre sure to become the most likable person in your office.
