The freelancers guide to ultimate productivity with Mac OS

The freelancers guide to ultimate productivity with Mac OS677Desktop 1 The Personal StuffMy first desktop is the only real constant in this picture. Its for personal things, fun things. It contains my personal email, facebook, and whatever Im reading. I generally keep it on the left side of my desktops because its always relevant and it helps to have it in the same distributions-mix at all times. I always know if I want my personal stuff I just swipe left a few times and Im there.Related articlesQuestions to ask your future manager before joining the teamWhat should a cover letter include in 2018?6 powerful women to inspire your next career moveDesktop 2 This ArticleSo after the personal desktop, each one is set to one task. This article for example. Desktop 2 has a slack channel, some articles Im using for reference, and a Google Doc. That makes for three windows, each with one or two tabs open (thats important for later). What this all means is that everything in this desktop is con nected to writing this article and if I swipe up with four fingers I immediately see everything I have on this desktop. That translates into clarity and visibility.Desktop 3 Project ManagementI also help manage a project creating an online education platform about entrepreneurship in Sub-Saharan Africa. Here Ive got three windows, one for the various Trello boards associated with this project, another with a few articles I need to read on that subject, and a final one with updates from the company. So this desktop is for managing the project, but if I need to write a lesson, Ill use another desktop to keep my total number of windows and tabs down. Plus, if Im writing a lesson I dont need to have easy access to unterstellung project management tools.Desktop 4 Lesson WritingHere Im writing a lesson for the project mentioned in Desktop 3. Ive got an excel document open with all the transcribed interviews Im basing the lesson on in addition to a Google Doc and a page containing the outli ne and request for the lesson. Once again, Ive got only three windows each with no more than three tabs.Desktops 5-7 Free SpaceI always try to make sure I have at least one blank desktop. That means if anything new comes up which isnt connected to an additional task, I have a place to put it. It also means I always have at least one empty desktop to use as a buffer between my active and inactive tasks. Active tasks go on the left of the empty desktop(s) while inactive ones are on the right. This way I can keep track of how many things Im actively working on at all times.Desktop 8 Inactive TasksAnything Im not working on now but want to leave open goes here. In this case, its some project management windows for my work as a content creator. At the moment, Ive completed all of my tasks there, so that desktop gets moved off to the right until it becomes active again.Organizing Within DesktopsTo be honest, every time I see someone with 20-30 tabs open in a single window Im a bit horrifi ed. Not because theyre doing too many things at once (Im certainly as guilty as they come there) but because they have essentially no organization to it. Truth is, its not that hard to avoid this problem. If you read the section above, the answer should be fairly obvious. If you maintain separate desktops for your various tasks, then each time you need to open something new, this should be done within that desktop. So you shouldnt end up with a single window in a single desktop with open web pages pertaining to 4 different projects. Then, whenever you end up with more than 4 or 5 tabs in a single window, ask yourself if you can either close some of them or create a new window for them organized around a single purpose. Whenever you get a tab pileup, this tells you that some action needs to be taken to avoid a pileup.Moving Between DesktopsI changed from using Windows to using Mac OS back in 2007. If you asked me why Ive stuck with that change for all these years it wouldnt be for the hardware, for the stability, for the aesthetic, or any of the other reasons Mac users usually give. For me, its all about gestures.Four fingers to the right, four fingers up, three fingers to the left, two fingers to scroll, these action are at the absolute core of how I interact with my laptop and how my organizational ordnungsprinzip works. I can have so many windows on so many desktops because Ive set up my trackpad so I can easily move between them and see everything I have open with just a few gestures.Chances are, if this system sounds awful to you, its because you havent set up the gestures or keyboard shortcuts necessary to make it work. Thats the real key, you have to be able to easily move between all of these desktops and windows. Take that ability away and this entire system falls apart.Sounds Interesting? Try ItPlease, lets all do what we can to prevent 30 tab windows from haunting our nightmares. Stopping that particular scourge is in our hands. But Im also curious to h ear how you all organize your work? Let me know more about your system in the comments. The Importance of Having a Mission Statement

The Importance of Having a Mission StatementThe Importance of Having a Mission StatementMission statements are a part of the corporate landscape, but theyre also valuable for small businesses, even solo practitioners. What is a Mission Statement? A mission statement is a short statement of an organizations purpose that Identifies the scope of its operationIdentifies what kind of products or services it providesIdentifies its intended audienceIdentifies what values it adheres it. It may also include a short statement of such fundamental matters as the organizations philosophies its main competitive advantages, and the desired future state, or vision.More than a description of the organization, the mission statement is an expression. It is made by its leaders, of their desires and intentions for the organization. Advantages of Having a Mission Statement Mission statements are a way to direct a business in the right direction, and they play a part in helping a business make soun d decisions which can be beneficial to the revenue stream. Without a mission statement, businesses may struggle when it comes to planning for the future. Especially as a small business owner, if your talent pool is small, then putting our intentions on paper is useful when it comes to running your business. Simply by putting your thoughts on paper will create clarity. Disadvantagesto Having a Mission Statement While it sounds counter-intuitive, and most often, mission statements are beneficial, they can present a problem if you spend too much time fretting over what to say and how to say it. It is when its helpful to get a second opinion, especially by an outsider who is not close to the situation. Another disadvantage is if you end up being unrealistic in what you promise and then dont deliver on those results. Sample Mission Statement Below is a sample of a mission statement written for the Adonias Beauty company. Here at Adonias Beauty, our teams mission is to raise aware ness regarding the importance of safe handling and storage of your makeup, skincare, and perfume products. We believe that proper tools are essential to keeping your cosmetic products fresh and are key to maintaining a clean and healthy beauty routine, for men and women. We are committed to continuous improvement in providing you with ways to maximize your products full benefits. Getting Started on Your Mission Statement The best way to go about what seems like a daunting task is to do your homework. Go online and read mission statements of companies you admire and respect as well as those in the same industry. You dont want to copy what your competition is saying, but youll get a good sense of what works, and what doesnt work. Who Should a Mission Statement Target? There are three primary audiences that your mission statement should target. First, your customers, because it may help answer why they should buy from you.Second, your employees, because it should help you conve y to them what you care about.Third, your potential business investors, because it helps you define what is unique about what you do, how you strive to do it, and why they should invest in you. Dont Commit Right Away Remember, you can write your mission statement in pencil. You dont have to commit right away. Its an important document so you should spend a fair amount of time tweaking it before signing off on the final version.

4 Tweaks to Perfect Your Resume and Score an Interview

4 Tweaks to Perfect Your Resume and Score an Interview4 Tweaks to Perfect Your Resume and Score an InterviewEven if you are the most qualified person for a job on the planet, you wont get in the door for an bewerbungsgesprch unless you have a respectable resume. If youre applying to larger organizations, an applicant tracking system first filters your resume. Only if the system deems that you have the basic level of qualifications, will an employer get an eye on it. From there, if you want an employer to look at it for more than 10 to 20 seconds, you need to make a good impression.A tracking system typically assures an employer that you have the basic qualifications necessary to perform the job. So what potential employers will be looking for with the naked eye are notable pieces of your background and what the system doesnt catch, including how well youve presented yourself. Although this is not a box to tick off on a checklist, your overall presentation makes a significant and mi nd-changing impression on an employer. And this can, and almost always will, trump your experience. If you havent presented the information well, it doesnt matter how qualified you are. If you cant present yourself properly for a job you are competing for, then what would your work product look like on the job? The employer wont want to take a chance on that.Heres what to look for in a resume that will impress the humans reading it.Clarity and consistency. These seem like simple concepts, but theyre missed astonishingly often. Every section of your resume and the way you platzset it up needs to be clear, so key information can be found easily. Look at your resume as if it were the first time you were seeing it. Can you quickly identify your organizations, job titles and time periods worked? Dont over-complicate the style by using a multitude of fonts, different bullet types and varied tabs and indentations. Each section should follow the last in terms of a general format and style. Consistency is extremely important.Expand. If you think its enough to drop in the language of your formal job descriptions at work, its not. Once a person decides they like what they see overall and to read your resume in more detail, your bullets will make a big difference. Tell them exactly what you do in your bullets. If the results of what you do arent readily apparent, question what you do or did. In other words, what would you ask yourself in an interview to expand upon your resume? Who do you write reports for and what do they use the information for? What departments do you work with on a daily basis? Have you made recommendations that have been used by your company?Write well. Its a dead-end street if you are using clich phrases, making grammatical or spelling mistakes or writing poorly. Employers read a lot of resumes and they do not like reading the saatkorn words and phrases over and over again. Be unique by putting thought into your document. Paraphrase if youve done so mething similar in a past position. Dont fall into the trap of looking the same as everyone else. Read over your work and have friends do so, too. Mistakes will mark the end of your application process.Length. Though its routinely discouraged, people still believe that a resume can be more than two pages if they have more information to add. Dont fall victim to this grave mistake. In general, your resume should not creep past one page if you have less than 10 years of experience. It should not go past two pages if you have 10 or more years. The typical exceptions to this rule are when you apply to federal government roles, or if you are a professor or medical doctor. In order to keep it to one or two pages, you must read through it critically. Are you repeating tasks across job descriptions where unnecessary? Are you using superfluous words? Is whats in there relevant to the jobs youre applying to, or is some of it unnecessary?Check your resume in different formats, such as PDF or o ther formats. You may think its on two pages, but then when you send it to someone, its on to a third page. Try sending it to yourself and opening it to be sure. While these steps wont guarantee you an interview, they will get you much closer to one. When you dont follow these basic guidelines, you risk your application being disregarded completely, no matter who you know in the organization. Some extra care and attention can go a long way to helping you get in the door for an interview.
